Learning Happiness from Aliens

“Suddenly, our social lives had become digital concepts contained within WhatsApp message threads and Zoom meetings. I’d never been fond of messaging back and forth or talking on group calls. It didn’t feel natural to me, and it usually ended up draining my mental energy instead of replenishing it. Sometime during the second lockdown, whilst enduring my third group Zoom call of the week with a choppy internet connection, my mind drifted to the Solarians. Why did viewing come so easily to them, when it felt so awkward for me?”

In this article for Making It Wyrd, I explore the parallels between the isolation of the 2020 lockdowns and life on Solaria, a fictional planet within Isaac Asimov’s Robot universe. Somewhere along the way, it turns into a think piece about finding a balance between technology and analogue living.
